Lose Weight In 2021

Updated: May 17, 2023

Being in the fitness industry as a personal trainer I know that this is the time of year where most people set themselves New Year goals to lose weight and get in shape for summer. The motivation is there (for the first couple of weeks at least) but the realisation that you actually have to give stuff up like eating whatever, whenever kicks in and suddenly being in shape and losing weight isn't so appealing.

Here's a few things that can help you to stick to those goals and look better in time for summer.

Don't try to do too much all at once

It's so easy to get overwhelmed by so many changes; not eating chocolate, not eating sweets, giving up alcohol, working out everyday ... the list goes on. My advice for this is to focus on one change per week, or two if you can manage it. Master those for 7 days and then add something else to keep working towards your long term goal. You've got plenty of time before that summer holiday so treat it as a marathon not a sprint and you'll find yourself staying on track easier.

Don't lose sight of the end goal

Set yourself short term goals as well as that final end goal. Don't get caught up on the fact you need to lose 30 lbs to get those six pack abs. That'll come, but it won't happen overnight. Set yourself realistic weekly targets that will allow you to keep achieving smaller goals along the way. That way you won't lose the motivation and you'll have a reason each week to keep working out and eating good.

Keep track of your progress

Get a notepad and keep track of your weight loss each week/month. Keep track of your workouts such as how much weight you're lifting, or how far you've managed to run and your time doing it. Try to keep making progress in your workouts each time so that your body is constantly adapting and having to change.

Get a friend with similar goals

Use a friend or partner to help you stay on track. This will be massively helpful for those times when you're a bit low on willpower. They'll keep you on track and you can do the same for them when they're feeling like demolishing a bar of chocolate.
